EP 6: Get Your Time and Freedom Back by Asking “Who” Not “How”
Episode 6
CUSTOM JAVASCRIPT / HTML
Welcome to episode 6! Today I am out here doing something I haven’t done in a while, and that is meeting with people here in KC who need to sell their homes fast. Until the last few years, I would handle all of the inspections myself, but today I have inspection agents who handle these tasks on behalf of my business. Today they are on vacation, and I am stepping back into the role for the week.
I see a lot of benefits to stepping back into this role. I enjoy meeting with sellers and working with them on ways to solve their real estate related problems. I also see this as a great opportunity to get a better look at my business to see if there are any ways in which we can improve our service.

Learning To Delegate…
Learning to delegate tasks can be tough as a business owner no matter what industry you are in. Throughout my career, there have been many time-consuming tasks others could do, but I hesitated to hand off the responsibility because I thought maybe they couldn’t do the job as well as I could.
This was a big mistake for me. A few years ago, I was typically spending two days per week in Omaha and two days per week in KC. I was meeting with all the home sellers myself, and spending hours upon hours on tasks that I should have been delegating to other people. I had less time to work on my business as I was spending so much time working in my business. And more importantly, I wasn’t spending the time with my family that I wanted to. The business I had created to provide me with freedom, was doing just the opposite.
The only way I could get freedom and scale my business the way I wanted to was to create free time for myself. I knew I needed to spend more time working on my business to get where I wanted to be. I had great people around me who were more than capable, but I had to let go of the reins, and let the people I was working with make the inspections on my behalf.

Delegating Within Your Business…
A few things to help you delegate within your own business include:

- Recognize Where You Can Delegate Tasks - what are some time-consuming task you do on a regular basis that you could pass on to another person?

- Identify The Right People - Having the right people helping you with the tasks of the business will help you grow. They may even be able to implement solutions you hadn’t thought of. As a business owner, it is up to you to put out the right messages in order to attract the top people for the job. Remember, it’s not the what, it’s the who. Instead of looking for the services you need, look for the right people for your team. When you have the right people in place, train them, but don’t micro-manage. Give them the freedom to help grow themselves and your business.

- Put The Right Systems In Place - Something I failed at when I first began delegating tasks in my business, was not having the right systems in place. I knew the tasks I needed to be fulfilled and I had great people in place, I just lacked the processes to get things done. For example, with the inspection process, I have specific scripts for the agents so that each one delivers a consistent message to the sellers we work with. I wanted all inspectors to communicate to clients in the same manner.

Today, I delegate all sorts of tasks within my business. Whether its agent to do inspections, assist with my business, or to take my home downsizing message to incorporate into their own businesses.

I’ve learned, that the only way to gain freedom and financial growth, is to learn how to find the right people, find the right systems, and develop relationships that help both the business and the employees grow.
