Today I have been doing some reflection about how I’ve spent my last 3 weeks as well as where I started and where I wish to go. If you have listened to previous episodes, you may have heard me mention that my family and I own a motorhome and we are often traveling together as a family. For the past three weeks, we have been doing just that. We were able to take my son up to a doctor's appointment in Minneapolis, spending a few days up there as a family. From there, my wife and son went home and I took the motorhome to Indiana for some maintenance and warranty work. As I sit here today, I am thinking about just how fortunate and grateful I am.
I Couldn’t Do This Alone
I consider myself very lucky to have the team I do. I have an excellent assistant who screens calls and processes web leads. I work with wonderful inspection agents who meet with sellers and inspect properties. Some real estate gurus will tell you that you can buy and sell real estate from anywhere. While this can be done, in my experience, it is much better to have boots on the ground. Someone who can inspect the property, providing you with photos and a detailed report.
This great team is handling all of the work I used to do before forcing myself to find other people to assist with these tasks. Many people learn this secret of business faster than I did. It’s important to have the right people instead of trying to do everything all on your own. I am still looking for someone to manage the company as a whole - this is my next step in the process.
While I was in Indiana, I was able to do all I needed to get my work done. Everything I needed to do was done remotely, giving me the freedom to do the things I’d like to do. In fact, while I was away, our company was able to buy 3 houses! I’ve said this before - if you can’t be away from your company for a month, you don’t have a company, you have a job. I am still working on the final step to be able to step away from the business entirely for an extended period of time.
Ask yourself… could you be away for a week? Could you travel and be away from your office without any problems?
Generating Leads For Others
While on the road, I was once again reminded of how people fail to monetize leads simply by not having a real estate license. There are people out there who could have no interest in doing what I do, people who have no involvement in buying or selling and may not see any benefit to getting a license. These people could work in many industries - generating leads who may need the help of a real estate agent who buys and sells homes. If these people were licensed, they would be able to pass these leads on as referrals, thus collecting a fee.
I met many people on the road who are “full-timers.” People who have given up living in a traditional home to live in their mobile home fulltime. Wherever they drive is home. All of these people, young, middle-aged, and retirees, could all benefit from generating some extra income to help facilitate their lifestyle on the road. These people aren’t usually working a typical 9-5. In many cases, they could spend a couple of hours a day or week generating leads, and simply passing them to other agents.
